Selecting Texts
By selecting appropriate texts to use in the classroom, we can enhance student learning and provide rich writing opportunities as well. There are a variety of factors to consider when choosing books to use in the classroom. When choosing informational books to use in the classroom, teachers need to think about the cover of the book, the content of the book, the illustrations, the captions, the organization of the text, and the size of the text (Laureate
Education, Inc., 2011b). In addition, we must also consider the difficulty of the texts we choose. Readability, text length and text structures are all good indicators of the level of difficulty (Laureate Education, Inc., 2011a).
The literacy matrix, presented by Dr. Hartman, is a system that organizes texts based on four categories: Narrative, Informational, Semiotic and Linguistic (Laureate Education, Inc., 2011a). As I chose the texts I would use to further student learning, I was sure to use a variety of text structures.
