Critical and Response Perspective
When educators teach reading and writing in schools, we must think about our learners and what interests them. Not only should we incorporate texts that interest our students, but we also need to make sure to use narrative texts that enable our students to examine problems from different characters’ perspectives (Laureate Education, Inc., 2011b). By doing so, we will be targeting the critical and response perspectives as we engage students in higher order thinking skills.
In this lesson, the students will continue to learn about bullying, with a focus on manners and friendliness. This is an excellent lesson to do at the beginning of the school year to help set guidelines for classroom behavior. I chose to use the text, The Day the Monster Came to School, retold by Kathleen Pedersen (2012). According to the literacy matrix, this story falls into the narrative and semiotic quadrants (Laureate Education, Inc., 2011a).
In the link below, you will be able to view my lesson plan for the critical and response perspectives.
